Paper Waste FACTS

A typical office generates about one pound of paper per employee and that from that paper, 77% of what is wasted in offices across the country is recyclable.

  • Using old paper to make new paper uses 30 to 50 % less energy that making paper from trees

  • If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year.

  • The amount of paper and wood we throw away each year is enough to heat 50,000,000 homes for 20 years.

  • White paper recycling helps you cut down 35% water pollutions, 74% air pollution and 75% processed energy.

  • The average person in the UK gets through 38kg of newspapers per year

  • It takes 24 trees to make 1 ton of newspaper

  • 12.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard are used annually in the UK

  • Books can't usually be recycled along with other paper recycling because of the glue that's used to bind them. Instead, you could pass them on to someone else, donate them to a charity shop or sell them online or at a car boot sale.
